The ENSEMBLE WIEN-BERLIN was founded in 1983 as a wind quintet with many exceptional qualities. Five soloists from Vienna and Berlin, primarily principal players with the Vienna and Berlin Philharmonic, decided to put their joint chamber music activities on a firm footing.
The group quickly achieved a tonal and musical homogeneity resulting from the combination of five outstanding soloists, each contributing his own stimulus and musical ideas to the development of a rich and vital whole.
Ensemble Wien-Berlin regularly performs with the pianist Maurizio Pollini at the most prestigious music centres all over the world including international festivals like Salzburg Festival. The variety of their programmes is enriched by pianists such as James Levine, Alexander Lonquich, Stefan Vladar, Elisabeth Leonskaja, Elena Bashkirova to name a few.
The members of the ensemble are:
WOLFGANG SCHULZ –Principal flautist of the Vienna Philharmonic. Internationally acclaimed soloist with the conductors Claudio Abbado, Leonard Bernstein, Herbert von Karajan, Lorin Maazel, Seiji Ozawa a.o. and partner of pianists like András Schiff, Maurizio Pollini, Stefan Vladar a.o. Professor at the Vienna University of Music.
HANSJÖRG SCHELLENBERGER – Principal oboist of the Berlin Philharmonic until 2001. Founder and Director of the Haydn-Ensemble Berlin, world wide activities as soloist with conductors like Claudio Abbado, Carlo Maria Giulini, Herbert von Karajan, Riccardo Muti. Since more than 10 years international activities as conductor.
NORBERT TÄUBL – Principal clarinettist of the Vienna Philharmonic, soloist in the Vienna Chamber Ensemble and in the Vienna Wind Octet. International concert activities as soloist and chamber musician.
MILAN TURKOVIC – Concerts throughout the world as soloist with conductors like Christoph Eschenbach, Carlo Maria Giulini, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Sándor Végh , a.o. International concert activities as conductor. Member of the Concentus Musicus Vienna; Member of the Chamber Society of the Lincoln Center New York.
STEFAN DOHR – Principal horn-player of the Berlin Philharmonic; worldwide activities as soloist with the conductors Daniel Barenboim, Sir Simon Rattel, Claudio Abbado, Ingo Metzmacher , Sir Roger Norrington a.o.
